SpaceX Could Become a Massive New Customer for Cell Tower Giants — Stocks Surge

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX), or SpaceX, is fueling a rally in U.S. cell tower stocks as investors bet its expansion into wireless services could create a major new revenue opportunity for infrastructure providers. American Tower Corporation (NYSE:AMT), Crown Castle Inc. (NYSE:CCI) and SBA Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:SBAC) climbed sharply in Friday’s trading following SpaceX’s latest spectrum acquisition. The deal has raised expectations that SpaceX could eventually lease space on existing cell towers to support its ambitions of becoming a major U.S. wireless carrier. Meanwhile, Nasdaq futures rose 0.62%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.25%. Why SpaceX’s Wireless Expansion Could Benefit Cell Tower Companies On Thursday, SpaceX announced an agreement to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz wireless spectrum portfolio. The companies did not disclose financial terms. The low-band spectrum can transmit signals over long distances and penetrate buildings, helping SpaceX address a major technical challenge in expanding its Starlink Mobile service. However, satellites alone may not be enough to compete with established wireless carriers. To build a nationwide mobile network, SpaceX could also need thousands of ground-based transmission sites, creating a potential opportunity for existing cell tower operators. Here’s why investors are excited: American Tower, Crown Castle and SBA Communications earn rental income by leasing space on their towers to wireless carriers. If SpaceX builds its own ground network, it could become another paying tenant on existing towers. That would generate additional rental revenue without requiring tower operators to build entirely new infrastructure at every location. Bernstein Sees Potential for Massive Network Spending According to Bernstein, building a standalone wireless network capable of competing with major U.S. carriers could cost SpaceX between $50 billion and $130 billion. Such an investment could create substantial demand for tower leases and related infrastructure services. However, the opportunity remains uncertain. SpaceX has not committed to a nationwide ground network rollout, and advances in satellite technology could reduce its dependence on traditional cell towers.
