Amazon Just Found a Way Around Nvidia’s Biggest Moat

NVIDIA Corp’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) biggest advantage in AI is not just the chips it sells. It is CUDA, the software ecosystem developers rely on to build and run AI workloads. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) may have found a way to challenge that advantage by making it easier for developers to use its own AI chips without rewriting their code. Amazon introduced TorchNeuron, an open-source tool designed to run PyTorch-based AI code on its Trainium chips with minimal modifications. The move targets one of the biggest barriers to switching from Nvidia: the engineering time and expense involved in adapting software to a different computing platform. • NVIDIA shares are advancing steadily. What’s driving NVDA shares up? Amazon Targets CUDA’s Advantage Nvidia’s software ecosystem creates switching costs that extend beyond hardware performance. Developers have spent years building workflows around CUDA, making it difficult for competing chips to win workloads even when they offer attractive economics. Amazon is trying to lower that hurdle. According to its TorchNeuron announcement, developers can run existing PyTorch code on Trainium with a configuration change rather than rewriting entire applications. That matters because PyTorch is widely used across AI research and development. Amazon does not need to displace CUDA immediately; it needs to make experimenting with an alternative less costly and time-consuming. Trainium’s Bigger Opportunity The launch builds on Amazon’s effort to expand its custom silicon business across AI training and inference. Its Trainium accelerators give Amazon Web Services a way to offer computing capacity built around its own hardware rather than relying entirely on Nvidia GPUs. Amazon’s custom chips have attracted major AI customers, including Anthropic, which uses Trainium in its Project Rainier computing cluster. TorchNeuron could make the platform accessible to more developers who might otherwise stick with Nvidia because switching involves too much work. Amazon has said more than 30 early customers across fields including robotics, voice AI and world models are using the tool. Broader adoption could help AWS compete on both computing costs and the ease of deploying AI applications. CUDA remains a mature ecosystem, and Amazon still has to prove that Trainium delivers competitive performance, reliability and economics across demanding workloads. But the competitive pressure could grow if developers can move applications between platforms with fewer changes. That would give cloud customers more flexibility and potentially strengthen Amazon’s bargaining power on AI infrastructure costs. For investors, the key question is whether Amazon can turn easier software migration into sustained Trainium demand. Amazon is not just trying to build an alternative to Nvidia’s chips; it is trying to reduce the software friction that keeps customers tied to them.
