FDA Flags Boston Scientific Catheter Recall

The FDA recently announced that Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE:BSX) is recalling all Imager II Angiographic Catheters. The medical device manufacturer issued an urgent letter advising affected customers to immediately remove these products from inventory due to a manufacturing flaw that compromises patient safety. Manufacturing Defect Prompts Recall The recall stems from a defect affecting the catheter tip. Boston Scientific determined that it produced these devices with inadequate levels of stabilizing agents. This flaw increases the risk that the catheter tip might degrade and detach during medical procedures. While the company identified no surge in tip detachment complaints for the affected lots, it manufactured the devices outside approved design specifications. Consequently, Boston Scientific is pulling the catheters from the market and permanently discontinuing the product line. If a tip detaches in the intravascular space, the most frequent consequence is a procedural delay to exchange the device. However, the defect carries remote but severe risks. A detached fragment could cause a life-threatening embolism by obstructing blood flow, potentially leading to end-organ failure. As of July 16, Boston Scientific reported two serious injuries linked to this issue, with no deaths. Instructions For Healthcare Providers On August 24, the company instructed customers to immediately halt the use and distribution of the affected catheters. Healthcare providers should continue monitoring previously treated patients under standard care protocols.
