Shield AI Is Taking GE Aerospace Deeper into AI's Most Unusual Battleground

The next frontier of artificial intelligence may not be another data center, but a fighter aircraft that can operate without a runway. GE Enters the Autonomous Fighter Push On Oct. 12, GE Aerospace, Shield AI and Poland’s Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 (WZL-2) signed a memorandum of understanding to explore maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities in Poland for GE’s F110 engine powering Shield AI’s X-BAT aircraft. The announcement covers the engine and its Axisymmetric Vectoring Exhaust Nozzle, which enables thrust vectoring for vertical takeoff and landing. The companies will assess the facilities, equipment and training needed to establish local maintenance capabilities. X-BAT is designed to take off and land vertically, potentially allowing it to operate from roads, ships and smaller sites instead of conventional runways. That flexibility could matter on NATO’s eastern flank, where airfields could be vulnerable during a conflict. GE’s F110 engine has accumulated more than 11 million flight hours over four decades of continuous production and improvement, according to the company. Its experience gives GE an established role in the program, while the thrust-vectoring nozzle is designed to support X-BAT’s vertical flight capability.
