Glaukos Reveals Superior Intraocular Pressure Reduction With Novel Eye Therapy

Ophthalmic pharmaceutical and medical technology firm Glaukos Corporation (NYSE:GKOS) reported successful topline outcomes from its latest Phase 4 clinical study. The trial evaluated the effectiveness of administering the company’s iDose TR therapy alongside traditional cataract surgery. Researchers compared this combined approach directly against cataract surgery performed independently for patients managing open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Meeting Primary Efficacy Targets The recent clinical trial successfully achieved its designated primary efficacy goal. Investigators determined that combining the therapy with cataract procedures significantly outperformed standalone surgery in lowering mean diurnal intraocular pressure. By the three-month mark, participants receiving the combined treatment saw their intraocular pressure drop by a mean of 11.1 mmHg from their initial baseline measurements. Meanwhile, subjects who underwent only cataract surgery experienced a smaller 7.4 mmHg reduction. This performance demonstrated a clinically notable additional treatment benefit of 3.6 mmHg. Furthermore, the combined therapy successfully surpassed standalone surgery across all predetermined secondary responder analyses. This consistency validates the strong treatment effect observed throughout the medical study. The study recorded no treatment-related adverse events involving corneal endothelial cell loss or cystoid macular edema, nor did it register any severe corneal complications. These updated clinical safety findings align seamlessly with the well-established safety history of the medical treatment. The comprehensive Phase 4 study involved 149 randomized study eyes across multiple medical centers. Clinical teams assigned 74 eyes to the combination treatment group and 75 eyes to the surgery-only control group, tracking the pressure changes as the primary clinical focus. Addressing Patient Compliance Challenges The implant operates as a unique, extended-release pharmaceutical therapy. The device continually supplies a specialized travoprost formulation directly inside the patient’s eye for as long as three years. The company designed this long-duration procedural treatment to actively overcome widespread patient non-compliance challenges and the chronic side effects frequently linked to standard topical glaucoma medications.
