Private Equity Is Pouring Money Into Publishing Again — Here’s Why

Private equity and venture capital investors are putting more money into the publishing industry in 2026, betting on predictable cash flows and a fragmented market that offers opportunities for consolidation. Global PE and VC transaction value in publishing reached $918.8 million between Jan. 1 and Sept. 22, more than double the $369.1 million recorded during all of 2025, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. The data covers publishers of newspapers, magazines, books and other content across print and electronic formats. Investors completed 20 publishing deals through Sept. 22, compared with 25 during all of 2025. S&P Global said private equity firms are attracted to publishers due to their predictable cash flow characteristics, including recurring demand, repeat purchases, and diversified revenue streams. The industry’s fragmented structure is also creating opportunities for sponsors to pursue buy-and-build strategies, acquiring smaller companies and combining them into larger platforms through mergers and acquisitions. Brightstar Capital Partners is one example of that strategy. The firm acquired Bendon Inc. in April before adding School Zone Publishing Co. in July and the North American business of Hinkler Books Pty. Ltd. in September. The transactions illustrate how sponsors can use an initial acquisition as a platform for additional deals within a fragmented sector. KKR’s $500M Publishing Deal The largest publishing transaction tracked by S&P Global in 2026 came from KKR & Co., (NYSE:KKR) which acquired a 51% stake in Thomson Reuters Corp.’s global print business for approximately $500 million. Thomson Reuters retained a 49% stake in the business, which provides legal and tax information in print and electronic formats and also offers printing services to book publishers. The deal helped make Canada the largest regional market for publishing investment during the period, with $505 million across two transactions. The U.S. ranked second with $372.5 million in aggregate transaction value. AI Adds Another Angle Artificial intelligence could provide another source of operational improvement for publishing companies, according to S&P Global. Generative AI could "shorten development cycles, improve demand forecasting and analytics and automate administrative tasks, potentially allowing creative and commercial teams to spend more time on work requiring human judgment," S&P wrote. That creates an additional consideration for private equity investors evaluating publishing assets: beyond recurring revenue and consolidation opportunities, sponsors may see room to improve operations through technology. For an industry undergoing changes in how content is produced and consumed, the 2026 deal activity suggests investors are focusing on the characteristics that can make publishing businesses attractive to private capital — cash generation, recurring demand, fragmented ownership and opportunities for operational efficiency.
