FDA Expands Approval Of Eli Lilly's Olumiant For Adolescents with Autoimmune Hair Loss

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted expanded approval to Eli Lilly and Co.’s (NYSE:LLY) Olumiant (baricitinib), allowing adolescents aged 12 and older with severe alopecia areata to receive the once-daily oral treatment. The clearance broadens the medication’s U.S. indications, which already include adults suffering from severe alopecia areata and moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. At the start of the study, participants recorded a median Severity of Alopecia Tool score of 100, reflecting total scalp hair loss, after living with the condition for a mean of 6.4 years. Results showed that 42% of patients receiving a 4 mg daily dose achieved 80% or greater scalp hair coverage at 36 weeks, compared with 27% on 2 mg and 5% on placebo. Furthermore, 37% of adolescents taking 4 mg attained at least 90% scalp hair coverage, alongside 21% of 2 mg recipients and 2% on placebo. Patients also experienced improved eyebrow and eyelash coverage on the 4 mg dosage. Dosage Guidelines And Safety Profile The overall safety profile for pediatric patients matches that observed in adults with severe alopecia areata. Olumiant carries a boxed warning detailing risks of serious infections, mortality, malignancy, major adverse cardiovascular events, and thrombosis. Physicians can prescribe Olumiant in 1 mg, 2 mg, and 4 mg tablets. Recommended dosing starts at 2 mg daily, with potential escalation to 4 mg daily if response is inadequate. Patients presenting with nearly complete hair loss may begin on 4 mg daily before stepping down to 2 mg once achieving an adequate response. Product Background And Market Scope Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) originally discovered the oral JAK inhibitor before licensing it to Lilly. Since 2017, doctors have prescribed Olumiant to over 33,000 U.S. patients. Following adult approval in 2022, the European Commission cleared the drug for adolescents in April 2026.
