MBTA Approves $310.4 Million Purchase of Siemens Locomotives

The MBTA board has approved a $310.4 million contract to purchase 20 Siemens Charger locomotives, which include 10 diesel-electric and 10 dual-mode battery-catenary electric hybrids. This acquisition aims to replace aging locomotives and is expected to begin deliveries in mid-2029. The new locomotives will comply with EPA Tier 4 standards, significantly reducing emissions compared to the existing fleet, and the funding will come from both state and federal sources.
